Maxine plays on a variety of harps. Here is some information about each of them.

Italian triple harp: Built by Claus Hüttel. Based on the painting by Nuvolone. This harp has three rows of strings, allowing for many chromatic possibilities. It was popular in the 17th century. It is a wonderful solo instrument very suited for the music of composers such as Trabaci, Frescobaldi, and even Handel. It is also very suited for accompanying singers in operas and oratorios from Monteverdi to Handel. I have two of these instruments, one built in 2007, the other in 2020.

Renaissance Gothic triple harp: Built by Claus Hüttel. Based on a painting from 1530 in the Kunsthistorischen Museums, Wien. This is a very versatile harp, and is my go-to travel harp, and can do mostly everything the Italian triple can do minus some of the bass strings. This harp is good for playing solos, sounds equally great playing Lawes Harp Consorts and traditional English/Irish music.

*FOR SALE* German double harp “Sondershausen” model” Built by Claus Hüttel in 2001. Based on a harp in the Sondershausen Castle in Thüringen built around 1700. This harp has brays and a very clear and bright upper register. Very suitable for solo music as well as accompanying singers and instrumentalists.

Spanish arpa doble: Built by Claus Hüttel in 2002. Based on an original harp built by Pere Elias um 1704. Played from the 16th century until around 1750 through the Iberian peninsula, and is a model of the harps that can be found to this day in South America.

Lyon and Healy Double Action Pedal Harp: This is a rare find! A harp that is over 100 years old and still has it’s original sound board, and has had no need for repairs besides typical regulations and some cleaning. It is a Washburn #195 model from 1911. This harp can play anything a double action pedal harp can play. I use it for Classical and early Romantic music.

Celtic Lever Harp Built by Claus Hüttel in 2010. This small harp is typically used for folk music and is often the first harp a student will learn on. The levers allow for chromatic possibilities.
